On the fourth day of creation, before a single clock existed, the sky was given a job. "Let there be lights in the expanse of the sky to divide the day from the night; and let them be for signs, and for seasons, and for days and years." Look closely at the fourth day of creation and you will find not one clock, but three.
The sun keeps the shortest watch. It rises, crosses, and sets, dividing light from darkness — the day, the oldest unit of time there is. No one has ever needed to be taught to read it.
The moon keeps a slower rhythm. Its phases — new moon, first quarter, full moon, and back again — trace a circuit of roughly a month. Watch it for a few nights and you can feel time moving; it is the most visible countdown in the sky, faithful and unhurried, month after month.
The stars keep the longest watch of all. The constellations climb and descend with the seasons, so that a winter sky and a summer sky are different rooms. Long before instruments, people knew where they stood in the year simply by looking up.

For signs and for seasons
Genesis 1:14 gives the lights four purposes: signs, seasons, days, and years. Days and years we still use. But the first two are easy to read past.
"Seasons" here carries more than weather. In its older sense it means appointed times — moments set in advance, meetings that already have a date on them. The lights were not placed only to measure time, but to mark it: to point at the days that matter.
And "signs" are the sky's exceptional moments — an eclipse, a rare alignment, a light doing something worth noticing. Not omens to fear; witnesses to watch. The sky was made to be watched.
The equinox: the year's turning point
Twice a year the sun crosses a quiet line, and day and night stand nearly equal all over the earth. The equinox needs no instruments and no authority to certify it. It simply happens, the same for everyone, and it has marked the turning of the year for as long as anyone has watched the sky.
A reckoning preserved in ancient sources counts the year from that turning point: 364 days from the spring equinox, dividing into 52 weeks with nothing left over. In that year the Sabbath never drifts. Every feast and appointed time keeps its day of the week, year after year. It is a creation calendar in the plainest sense — a year read straight from the lights of the fourth day.
